5 Outside the box

There are three more ideas that could be implemented along side the Google Cycle Map;

The first one is to include more safety training when learning to drive a motor vehicle as the standard information given is very limited. Here is a screen shot from the Queensland Transport Learner Driver Handbook (page 20) that has only one paragraph on the subject of safely maneuvering around cyclists.

The second is to offer a free cycling manual with the purchasing of every bicycle. The current safety guide offered by the Queensland Government is of very low quality and has a very limited list of safety strategies. So as an example of how a quality bicycle guide could look, here are some slide show images taken from the BicycleSafe.com, titled ‘How Not to Get Hit by Cars’. This guide is so simple that text isn’t even required to understand its signification.

The third is an event to create even more exposure than the standard National Bike to Work event being held on the 17th of October. This event tilted ‘Cycling GC’ will be more artistic to create impact and more awareness. Here is a slide show detailing the logistics and theme behind the Cycling GC event idea.

Now in relation to these ideas/proposals, a portal has been opened in cyclingforums.com under the title ‘Gold Coast needs to promote cycling’.  The following screenshots and links provide are from an ongoing conversation about the issues here in the gold Coast.  Also there are some useful recommendations from a reliable source called ‘Wheels of Justice’.
